World Rhino Day 2018

In preparation for World rhino day in Sept 2018, the GCF visited local schools to teach the learners about rhinos, poaching issues and conservation and why these issues impact each of us. This forms part of our environmental education program in which we hope to teach learners more about conservation and inspire them to pursue careers in conservation in the future.

The children from Herbertsdale Laerskools grade 6 and 7 learners worked with the GCF to create World Rhino Day posters. These posters were proudly used on the day by learners to talk about the issue of poaching and what we can do to help.

On World Rhino Day, the GCF invited Gr6 and 7 learners from the schools in our community to come and spend a day with us. Our goal – to teach them about conservation not only in a reserve but at home as well. The learners were taught how to recycle, track animals using telemetry, identify different animal skulls and bones and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Cape nature also collaborated with the GCF and presented their ideas on conservation through the different experiences that they offer on the day. The learners were also introduced to the various job opportunities that develop as a result of conservation. Gondwana Game Reserve and The GCF introduced the learners to the diversity of job opportunities available. From hospitality and hosting of guests to being a Chef, and field guide or becoming part of the GCF conservation team. We hope to make an impact and inspire the next generation to join in conservation work and see the possibilities it holds.
